One of South Africa’s leading kwaito bands, Bongo Maffin formed in 1996. This trio is made up of lead singer Thandiswa Mazwai, Zimbabwean-born Appleseed and Stoan from the Northwest Province of South Africa. Bongo Maffin have had several hit releases, including Thath’isigubhu and their multi-platinum 2005 release New Construction. Their music is rooted in house music rhythms, with elements of rap, R&B, dancehall and reggae thrown in. Some compare their style and general musical approach to the Fugees.
